Mental illness in Australia is very common. One in five people experience mental illness in any given year and almost half of all Australians will experience a mental disorder in their lifetime. Anxiety, depression and substance use disorders are the most common mental illnesses.

There are many treatment options available and with the right support many people do recover.

Sometimes counselling with a psychologist is recommended. Mental Health Care Plans are available in most of these situations, allowing up to 6 Medicare subsided visits with a psychologist. A further 4 counselling sessions can be arranged upon review, totalling 10 sessions per 12 months.
